Hurricane Season Checklist for Tenants

Hurricane Season Checklist for Tenants

Hurricane season in Florida runs from 1 June to 30 November. Most storms pass without trouble, but a little preparation keeps you, your family and your belongings safe. Here is a practical checklist for renters.

At the start of the season

  • Know your zone. Look up your evacuation zone on the Miami-Dade County website and plan where you would go.
  • Get renters' insurance. Your landlord's insurance covers the building, not your belongings. Check that your policy covers wind and water damage.
  • Photograph your belongings and keep receipts for valuable items, stored online.
  • Turn on notifications in your tenant app so you receive building updates and storm instructions.
  • Save important numbers: 911, our 24/7 line 07878787878, and your insurer.

When a storm is coming

  • Bring in everything from your balcony or patio — furniture, plants and grills can become dangerous in high winds.
  • Close impact windows and shutters, or follow our team's instructions if shutters need to be fitted.
  • Move valuables and electronics away from windows and off the floor.
  • Fill your car's fuel tank and charge every device.
  • Set your fridge and freezer to the coldest setting.
  • If you are told to evacuate, go — and let us know you have left.

After the storm

  • Stay indoors until officials say it is safe.
  • Avoid flood water, which may hide hazards or be contaminated.
  • Take photos of any damage before cleaning up.
  • Report damage to us through the app as soon as you can — mark it as urgent.
  • Contact your insurer about damage to your belongings.

What we do

Before every season we inspect roofs, drains, shutters and generators across our buildings. When a storm approaches we send instructions through the app, secure shared areas and pools, and our maintenance team is on standby to assess homes and start repairs as soon as it is safe.
