Simple habits that make long drives safer, cheaper and more fun.
A good road trip is less about the destination than about small decisions made before you leave. Here are five tips we share with every renter who is about to head out on a long drive.
1. Do a five-minute walk-around
Before you leave the branch, walk around the car with our agent. Check tyres, lights, windscreen and mirrors, and make sure existing marks are on the damage diagram. Take your own photos of all four sides, the dashboard (for mileage and fuel) and the boot. It takes five minutes and prevents most disagreements.
2. Plan fuel and breaks
Stop for a break every two hours, even if you feel fine. Fill up before the tank is a quarter full on remote roads such as the Tamiami Trail. If you share the driving, add the second driver to the booking in advance: only named drivers are insured.
3. Use tolls the smart way
Many Florida highways are cashless. Ask us for the toll device, which saves you from fines and administration fees, and charges you only the actual tolls at the end of the rental.
4. Pack light and smart
Keep valuables out of sight and take them with you when you park. Put heavy items low and in the middle of the boot. Keep water, snacks, a phone charger and a small first-aid kit within reach. For kids, book child seats in advance; they are a legal requirement for young children.
5. Know who to call
Save our 24/7 roadside number in your phone and keep your rental agreement in the glovebox. If something goes wrong, stay calm, move to a safe place and call us. We will arrange assistance, and if it is not your fault we will replace the car.
